“When I get off of this mountain, I know where I’m gonna go,” I thought to myself as I shivered in my damp sleeping bag in Strathcona Park on Saturday night. Was I delirious? I was thinking in song lyrics.
Unlike The Band, I was not headed to the Gulf of Mexico. Instead, visions of A&W danced in my head. It’s the best Vancouver Island road trip food, and occasionally – a contentious choice. Which A&W serves the best food on the drive from Victoria to Campbell River? I like the one that’s nestled beside the highway just outside Ladysmith and shares space with a Husky gas station. Friends of mine have hotly disputed this choice, but I’m sticking to my guns. |
Anyway, I got off the mountain on Sunday. Soaking wet and very tired from a long, beautiful hike through the park.
In the car, parked a few kilometres from the trail head, sat a can of Mott’s Caesar Extreme. I packed it as a treat for the way out.
When we reached the vehicle I ripped off my gaiters, took off my saturated boots, peeled off my wet socks and changed into some dry clothes. Then I cracked that Caesar open and took a few gulps. It tasted like spicy tomato juice, and it tasted glorious after the hike.
My friend took the drink. “It’s so sweet. It’s SO sweet,” she remarked between sips. “And it’s pretty spicy.”
We drained the can and hit the road. (Our designated driver did not indulge.)
This can was definitely an improvement over the Mott’s Caesar Lime. They can’t really be compared. Mott’s Caesar Extreme tastes like a Caesar, and Mott’s Caesar Lime is, well, something else.
This Caesar was a satisfying treat after a fun but tiring weekend and a decent pre-made cocktail.
What’s your favourite road trip food? Let me know in the comments.
