The second stop on my weekend of Caesars was a restaurant I’m very excited about. Full disclosure: I know the chef, Benjamin Berwick, and have been a fan of his home cooking for a while now. I’ve been looking forward to The Livet opening all summer. I have NOT been disappointed.
This isn’t a food blog, but just a quick note on the food … It’s delicious. If you love meat, you will love what is on offer here. My favourites are the pork belly and the scallop ceviche. Oh the scallop ceviche. I could write songs about how much I love the scallop ceviche.
Segue…
So, the first time I stopped by for a Caesar at The Livet was a Sunday after the wedding of some dear friends. I was feeling a little worse for wear after driving back into Victoria from Metchosin (we made a great pit-stop at Metchosin Day. The sheep shearing demonstration was so enjoyable!) and I needed some liquid help.
I walked up to The Livet’s rooftop location and sat down in the sun and ordered a tequila Caesar. It was a good looking little cocktail with two of the most flavourful pickled beans I’ve ever had. I suspect they do them in-house. I knocked the drink back while staring blankly into the middle distance and listening to the table beside me chat away.
Ben came out of the kitchen to say hi and offered me an unexpected extra hangover cure. He brought over a couple of shots of his scallop ceviche marinade. At first I was skeptical, but once it was in my mouth, my doubt was washed away. I don’t want to be dramatic or anything, but that marinade is like finding out heaven is real. It’s like drinking happiness. It’s citrusy, salty, sharp, sweet, cool and refreshing.

And, it really did help the hangover.
My phone was dead, so I didn’t take a picture of the Caesar. Soooo, obviously I had to go back to get a picture. My friend R and I headed there after North 48 on Friday night and I ordered a tequila Caesar again. Again – it was a very tasty drink. A celery salt rim and tomatoey mix with beans as delicious as the first one. We ordered the scallop ceviche and I had a brainwave after I finished my Caesar when I realized I wanted to POUR THE EXCESS MARINADE INTO THE DRINK! Alas, all I had left was melting ice and a few drops of cocktail. I think a shot of that marinade in the drink would probably be the best goddamn thing I’ve ever tasted though. I’d probably have to shut down the blog. SOMETHING TO THINK ABOUT. Anyways. What I’m trying to say is that I had a good time. |
